What is RFoG?

RFoG, or RF over Glass, is a technology that allows Cable Operators to deliver services over a Passive Optical Network (PON) using existing CPE and back office systems.  Headend service delivery and provisioning systems can also be the same as in a traditional Hybrid Fiber Coaxial (HFC) system.

All services are carried within the standard CATV forward and reverse RF spectrum, typically 54MHz to 750, 870, or 1002 MHz forward and 5-42 MHz reverse.  RFoG provides triple play video/voice/data services in the same manner as HFC:

  • Video is analog or digital connected through a traditional CATV set top box
  • Voice is VoIP connected through a PacketCable E-MTA
  • Data is delivered with DOCSIS through a traditional cable modem or E-MTA

Solutions for Today — Capacity for Tomorrow

RFoG networks deliver the voice/video/data triple play through an all fiber physical layer that is also compliant with EPON protocols.  This provides a migration path for the seamless transition to EPON over the same physical plant at a later date.  Furthermore, the service offering through RFoG is fully compatible with existing headend signal processing, metro area transport, backoffice, and customer service operations.
